Jack’s back, and like any hot and bothered bluesman, he wants to talk women and God. He can’t get no rest with these issues on his conscience. The good news is that Icky Thump wears his worries like a tortuous battle scar. Our man in red has never been more conflicted or vulnerable. New to the Stripes’ bag of tricks are: synthesizers (“Icky Thump”, “Prickly Thorn”), torrid tango and trumpets (“Conquest”), bagpipes, spoken-word, and Catholic fear (“St. Andrew”), Motorhead-esque guitar and capitulation (“Little Cream Soda”), organ and lamentation (“I’m Slowly Turning into You, “A Martyr for My Love “). If this is Icky, I want it all over me. –Carrie Alison
