Like another large “chamber-pop” band I won’t mention, Philadelphia’s illuminea—quirky as they are—does not suffer from genre predictability. In fact, no matter how claustrophobic the material might sound, this schizophrenic, exceedingly melodic and exceptionally talented band does not suffer at all. Their veritable kitchen-sink approach to instrumentation, with often stunning or shocking results, always leaves the listener with the element of surprise. It remains to be seen if Out of Our Mouths is the ideal soundtrack for a renaissance festival, the plaintive rhythm accompaniment of a tragic music box figurine, a Starbucks artist-of-the-month or a burlesque tent revival. Either way, “Build Your Own” is destined for iPods and a future Big Moment of a scenic Coachella sunset. Commence download now. –Carrie Alison
