Take the moxie of Gwen Stefani, add a generous helping of badass, dye her hair black, put a frilly dress on her and bless the girl with opera-trained pipes, and you’ve got 22-year-old Ryann Donnelly, lead singer of Schoolyard Heroes, and sure to be the female equivalent of My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way in just a short time. The proof is in the machine gun guitar-laden pudding, the vampiric battle cry of “Cemetery Girls,” the grave-waltzing of “Razorblade Kisses,” the defeatism of “The Last Man on Earth” (“You and I are the King and Queen of nothin’, baby”) and the sheer exhaustibility of being young, in love, and frustrated. Horror-punk be damned, I’ll meet these guys behind the gym anytime. –Carrie Alison
