This striking debut was written by Justin Vernon (formerly of DeYarmond Edison) during a three-month residence at a cabin in northwestern Wisconsin. The finished product, For Emma, Forever Ago, is sure to kick around in your head much longer than that. Vernon soothes and astounds with a delicate vocal style that leans more towards TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe than it does your typical bedroom recording fare. While “Skinny Love” is the standout, the cohesiveness of the record lends itself to complete listens more than any bedroom recording in recent memory. French for “good winter,” Bon Iver will undoubtedly help those struggling through those inevitable stir crazy winter days and nights. (Jagjaguwar) –D.J. Short
