The Long Blondes are finally moving up the ranks after years of being the UK’s favorite unsigned act. Their sophomore release, Couples, cements this catchy boy-girl quintet’s haute stance in the swirly and sometimes sloppy world of indie disco. With hotter-than-hot producer Erol Alkan lending a hand, there is no dispute that this album is one of the most creative and stylishly sultry releases of 2008. Leader of the pack Kate Jackson serenades through an intelligently dance-tastic series of tracks that explores the quarrels and qualms of life, (while time-traveling through decades of genres). Couples is quintessentially reminiscent of the late 50′s-early 60′s vibe the Blondes can’t help but encompass in their style and delivery, notably on “Round the Hairpin,” “Century,” and “Nostalgia.” (Rough Trade) –Andrea D’Alessandro
