Dirty, edgy claustrophobic fifth album by what is essentially a super group. Free Kitten features Julie Cafritz of Pussy Galore, Yoshimi from the Boredoms, and J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr on a few tracks. Oh, and Kim Gordon, from Sonic Youth. And yes, it sounds as cool on record as it does on paper. Kim’s breathy whispers, which I love, essentially make this very much a Sonic Youth-sounding work, although it is a little more bluesy in spots. “Seasick,” the first single, is a standout, since it’s hard not to love a track that has one of the greatest rock personalities singing “Sally sells seashells by the seashore.” I’d classify this as essential.
