It’s party rock for Follies, for absinthe-drenched nights at a bawdy cabaret. A steamy ode to campy frills and corsets, baroque and burlesque; and it all rides on the whims of Amanda Palmer and her thunderous piano-pounding caress on No, Virginia. Glam tales of longing and loving and loathing illuminate this sturdy collection of new songs, a fantastic, punchy old gem (“The Mouse and the Model”), a surprisingly sunny take on a beloved Psychedelic Furs tune (“Pretty in Pink”), and four unreleased tracks and b-sides from 2006’s Yes, Virginia. The true marvels here are the skippy, theatrical “Night Reconnaissance,” a creepy and gorgeous PJ Harvey-esque torcher called “The Gardener,” and a naked and mournful unreleased Yes, Virginia track, “Boston,” which might serve to make the greatest case for the Dolls’ singular brand of obsessive, glittery pathos yet.
