Laura Marling is the ethereal UK 18-year-old folk singer/songwriter, caught for the first time by those of us “in the know” at SXSW in March and then when she opened for Adam Green this month. She will release her debut album, Alas I Cannot Swim, on the Astralwerks label on August 19th. (It’s so good that there are already whispers that Marling may be nominated for a Mercury Prize in the UK this year). She’ll be returning to NYC before Britain’s summer festival season to play two special shows in June. (photo by Eileen Murphy)

Marling’s newest UK single, “Cross Your Fingers/Crawled Out Of The Sea”, is a two-part gem of a song. Watch the video here. And don’t miss your chance to see her perform in New York:

“Ms. Marling has learned more than tunes from the British ballad tradition. She has also absorbed its absence of self-pity and its determination to chronicle sorrows as clearly as joys, calmly outlasting them all.” Jon Pareles in The New York Times

“Marling’s lyrics and melodies belie her age and have a woeful and fatigued quality, delicately clear-cut in parts and raspy in others.” Nylon
