If this is rock and roll, then the end times are nigh. Not that Loene Carmen can’t rock, of course. And what actually is rock these days? Carmen attempts to answer the question. And when artists attempt an answer, it either works wonderfully (see Primal Scream’s Screamadelica) or comes off as almost perverse (Primal Scream’s Riot City Blues). The difference is that a band of Primal Scream’s caliber can rock through sheer force of will. The same cannot be said of Loene Carmen. Perhaps this is all too literal an interpretation of the title Rock ‘n’ Roll Tears, especially since some songs attempt a strain of the sort of psychedelic country popularized by Mazzy Star. The songs themselves are rather too long, and Loene’s voice doesn’t have the same sort of self-possessed quality of, say, Cherie Currie from the Runaways, to make this a memorable album.
