Move over Avalanches, Sonny J might be some competition in the realm of beat-bashing and slick sampling, while using foot-thumping funk as the foundation. Disastro matches 70′s stylistic references from The Brady Bunch against samples from Saturday morning cartoons and even crank phone calls to create a mash-up of energizing sounds. Perhaps the “disaster” inferred in the album title refers to the Frankenstein-like mix of sounds used to create something melodic, but it doesn’t matter when you have a work this inventive. Just listen to Sonny J’s latest single, “Can’t Stop Moving” and you’ll see why. (Astralwerks) –Andrea D’Alessandro
