Murfreesboro, Tenessee’s new pride and joy, Those Darlins, returned to NYC for a 2 night, sold-out run at Mercury Lounge. They played on January 15th with Ida Maria, and the following night with the Soft Pak. Three country girls gone bad, and a kick ass drummer, Those Darlins mix dirt-road country tunes with modern throwbacks.

Band members Kelly ( bass), Jessi (guitar), & Nikki Darlin (baritone ukele) are loaded with charisma and Southern sass, making them a band to watch in 2009.

Looking like Motown gals, in slightly matched gold attire, the three ladies took the NYC by storm on Friday night before a packed enthusiastic crowd. Upon first hearing them, you can’t help but fall in love with their melodies and harmonies, but live, these ladies manufacture a classic country wall of sound, matched with a punk style of rock roots–folk with songs about your mama and drunk driving. The girls even traded instruments from song to song and each member took on n the role of lead singer during the set.

Less than a year old, they’ve made quite an impression. The band released their EP, Wild One, on Nashville based label, Oh Wow Dang. Lately, the girls have been recording in NY with producer Jeff Curtain, who also did Vampire Weekend’s debut. Garnering major label attention, be on the look out for their scorcher of an LP due out later this year.

The ladies of Those Darlins are the real deal and extremely capable musicians. They bring a fierce magnetism that makes it easy to watch. They’ve already shared the stage  with O’Death, Heartless Bastards, Langhorne Slim, Deer Tick,  & Boss Hog. Make sure to catch them on their upcoming tour with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys starting Feb 28th.–Aishah Roberts/photos by Travis Huggett
