This solo project by the frontman of California’s The Willowz was recorded in a ranch-style house, equipped with vintage equipment, in southern California. Listening to Battle, it’s hard not to wonder how much of an influence that recording environment had on the final product. This is a captivating album full of slinky, smooth guitars and gritty, down home rock n’ roll riding overtop a dusty bluegrass structure. The title track glitters with psychedelia, its rough-hewn, wrangled warbles creating a gripping tapestry. “Translate” is another standout track, a sludgy, slow number that drips whisky-spiked honey the whole way through. While Battle is Follin’s solo record, the album itself hosts an impressive roster of guest musicians who each left their own distinct impressions upon Battle. (Red Bear Recordings) –Liz Worth
