Fifteen Favorite Albums This Year in No Certain Order

Fever Ray – Self-titled (Mute)  Chilling, raw, refined, rich and almost chewably dreamlike and dangerous.  These mysterious anthems pulsate.Arctic Monkeys – Humbug (Domino) I’m a sucker for their dark side.

The Dead Weather – Horehound (WEA/Reprise)  Predictable?  Maybe, but still powerful.

Julian Plenti …Is Skyscraper (Matador) Just when I was forgetting about Interpol, Banks comes out with this surprise and nearly outdoes the work of his other band.

Engineers – Three Fact Fader (Kscope) My go-to album for unwinding, meaningfully.  What does this mean exactly?  I don’t know, but it’s a swirling, caress of an album.

Jack Penate – Everything is New (XL) Couldn’t have asked for better summer songs.  Don’t just call him a revivalist; This boy’s grown up.

White Rabbits – It’s Frightening (TBD) It’s a toss up whether I enjoy their album or live shows more. Amazing band.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Self-titled (Slumberland)  This is sunny, jangle pop at its melancholic, NYC best.

Atlas Sound – Logos (Kranky)  Beautifully harrowing, revealing and calming is just one of the combos Bradford Cox does best.

Jarvis Cocker – Further Complications (Rough Trade)  The aesthete/professor wins me over every time.

The xx – xx (Young Turks)  Can’t fault these young’uns for making a seemingly easy, yet provocative album.  Subtle but impressive.

Cass McCombs – Catacombs (Domino) Soulful poetry, even the Dylan comparisons don’t bug me that much.

Silversun Pickups – Swoon (Dangerbird) They take over where Placebo left off, but with their own indelible emotion.

The Antlers – Hospice (Frenchkiss)  Voice that rivals Antony’s, quite a feat.–MVW, Editor
