Teen Dream is a departure from the windswept swoon of Beach House‘s previous album, Devotion, with first single, “Norway” as the bold centerpiece for the band’s latest, more expansive sound.  Victoria Legrand’s vocals, and her keyboards, take on darker tones and vibrancy, as if to match Alex Scally’s pulsing new instrumentation (such as on “10 Mile Stereo”), to make a work that’s all the more fearless.  Though I miss the meditative purr of mesmerizing, older hits like “Gila,” songs like “Silver Soul” have a similar moody glow, yet with more exoticism and structure.  An accompanying DVD, with a video for each song made by a different director, is an unexpected bonus.
