Denmark’s Efterklang returned to New York for a sold-out performance at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday night, and luckily for fans, the band decided to go forward with the tour in spite of some last minute challenges.

Lead singer and percussionist Casper Clausen joked about his voice having changed, saying “I’ve aged,” but he added that he’s recovering from some ailment that’s affected his vocal chords. The band’s violinist and backing vocalist, Peter Broderick, was unable to make it on the current trek because he’s recovering from knee surgery.

Charming as usual, Efterklang delighted with a range of songs varying from more experimental to electro-pop to folksy territory. Opening with slightly more pop-ish new songs, “Full Moon” and “Raincoats,” the nearly hour-long set was fairly heavy on material from the new album, Magic Chairs, released in February on 4AD. Older songs included “Mirador” and “Step Aside.” And following “Cutting Ice To Snow,” with its moments of silence and climatic ending, the band returned for an encore with another new one, “Mirror Mirror.”

Though some parts were noticeably missing (violin, saxophone, trombone), Wednesday’s performance still included a wide variety of instruments, from the usual guitar, bass, keyboards and percussion to flute, coronet and trumpet. Tim Cronin, who also performs with Camera Obscura, joined Efterklang onstage, playing trumpet on two songs (“Modern Drift” and “Alike”).

Balmorhea, the Austin-based band that was originally to be the support for most of Efterklang’s U.S. dates, canceled their tour last minute due to a family emergency. So for the New York show, the support slot was filled by two acts – Sam Amidon, an American singer-songwriter (originally from Vermont), and the Icelandic composer/conductor Daniel Bjarnason, with an orchestra. Efterklang is on the road in the States now and will end the tour with several shows at SXSW later this month. –Teresa Sampson, Photo by Teresa Sampson
