Bloc Party’s lead singer and guitarist Kele Okereke is set to release his first solo album, The Boxer, on June 22 via Glassnote Records. First single, the brilliantly named “Tenderoni,” will surface in the coming weeks.

Produced by XXXchange of Spank Rock (who worked on the Kills’ Midnight Boom), The Boxer finds Okereke “pushing the boundaries of his own melodic sensibilities, embracing pop, rock and electronic music to boldly step out as a solo artist in his own right,” and honoring contemporary influences such as Gary Numan, Michael Jackson and Bjork. Aside from “Tenderoni” and its dance-synth hybrid, look for a bass-heavy “Everything You Wanted,” and potential club bangers “Other Side” with its Dancehall leanings and chants, and “On the Lam.”

Though his work with Bloc Party is more guitar-based, as was his comfort zone, Okereke instead decided to expand his instrumental palette with The Boxer, remarking in a press statement, “I plugged in synths with no idea what they would do. I began programming drum beats, which I had never done before. It was completely back to the drawing board. It was exciting and terrifying. In most cases, I sat down, pulled a drum beat out of nowhere, and arranged stuff around that. It was as exciting to me as the first time I picked up a guitar. The key for the sound of the record was to take things as harsh and as physical as I could make them. These are the sounds that make me happiest in the world.”
