On an early Tuesday night, Sagit, half of Hank & Cupcakes, danced on her bass drum while her husband of 12 years, Ariel, was configuring his guitar and sample pedals. The crowd at Mercury lounge, snug to the stage, was following her lithe moves and taking every technical difficulty as a chance to prolong the show; “more and more” was their body language.

A few days before, I thought the band’s name was “Hank and the Cupcakes.” That phrase evoked a Casio keyboard driven variation on The Bodega Nocturne, a cupcake sale in tow. A short search revealed Hank & Cupcakes was inspired by a documentary on Charles Bukowski. Charles often went as Hank Chasinski and boarded the rollercoaster of selfless self-involvement with Pamela “Cupcakes” Wood. By the way, “Cupcakes” just published a memoir last month.
