She may now be based in NY, but since she was born in the Ukraine, Lana Mir must have overcome quite a few obstacles to get to the stage of being known as a standout singer/songwriter in our current downtown scene.

It doesn’t hurt that she’s got both the come hither looks and voice that waver between sultry 60′s girl poppers Nancy Sinatra and Francoise Hardy, but as an added plug, her voice has the cool, detached “gaze” of a minimalist modern like Stina Nordenstam.  Mir is quite the songwriter, as judging from her breezy single, “Summertime”, yet it’s her cover of the Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored” that refuses to leave my head.  At once lush and mysterious, she makes the song her own with bossa nova touches and an icy distance that shall, and will, cast ships of indie stalwarts under her spell.
