The Decemberists have announced their new album, The King Is Dead, will be released in the U.S. on January 18th, with Rough Trade Records bringing it out in the UK and Europe a day before. These latest ten songs are country-based and hearken back to the quintet’s original stripped-down approach, yet they also feature special guests such as Americana favorite Gillian Welch on seven tracks and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on three songs. It’s a far departure from their epic 2009 song-cycle, The Hazards of Love, though this album was once again produced by Tucker Martine.

Fans will have a chance to watch the album’s lead single “Down by the Water” performed by the band on Conan O’Brien’s new late show, “Conan”, on TBS on November 18th. The single will be released digitally on November 16th and a pre-order of The King Is Dead will launch at Decemberists.com beginning November 22nd.

It’s fitting that the new songs, deemed an “exercise in restraint” by the band, have more of a country feeling since the album was recorded in a converted barn at the sprawling Pendarvis Farm, outside of Portland, Oregon.

The track listing is below:

1. Don’t Carry It All
2. Calamity Song
3. Rise to Me
4. Rox in the Box
5. January Hymn
6. Down by the Water
7. All Arise!
8. June Hymn
9. This is Why We Fight
10. Dear Avery
