Dead Rock West, the West Coast’s sepia-tinged, rootsy folksters, will release Bright Morning Stars, their latest album, on April 12th on Red River Records. The band, featuring vocalist Cindy Wasserman (Grant Lee Phillips) and guitarist Frank Lee Drennen (Loam), brought in some stellar guest performers for the album, including none other than John Doe and Exene Cervenka of X, as well as The Jayhawks’ Mark Olson.

Though it’s certainly not meant only to speak to those with a religious bent, Wasserman and Drennen deem Bright Morning Stars, produced by Peter Case, a “total California spirituals record.” For their latest, the pair covered old time spirituals by Blind Willie Johnson, contemporary gospel songs by the Staple Singers, and the Jesus & Mary Chain’s “God Help Me” as well as six of their own new songs.

Dead Rock West’s members got together in 2002 and make up what’s considered a “who’s who of the Southern California rock and roots scene.” Their first album, Honey and Salt, released in 2007, found them being compared to the Flying Burrito Brothers and X.
