Planningtorock is one of those truly original artists whose work constantly blurs the barrier between art, performance and sound, with music that both haunts and soothes. It’s not surprising that we first discovered her, donning a mask, in a video posted on the once alluring Hintmag fashion site years back. Her latest album, W, coming out May 17, 2011 on DFA Records, promises to be a daring and “powerful soul odyssey that ravishes the listener” and will rank among one of DFA’s finest releases. If you like Fever Ray, you’ll be instantly enamored with Planningtorock.

Stun yourself with the visuals (that prosthetic nose!) and listen to the “pulse and jabbing pizzicatos” on her first single ‘Doorway’, which is also W‘s first video.

Planningtorock, aka Janine (originally from a town near Bolton in the UK, and who now resides in Berlin), wrote the 12 songs that make up W over three and a half years, mostly alone in her Berlin studio. She’s a gifted producer and sings and plays everything on the album, from keyboards to strings and guitar. The record was mixed in Sweden in 2010 during a session with Christoffer Berg. W‘s added contributions come from her Icelandic friend Hjörleifur Jónsson, whose percussion samples are sprinkled across the album, and drummer Pat Mahoney, recorded in New York. We hear Planningtorock is currently working with NYC’s CREEP on some of their latest collaborative remixes as well.
