Having just finished mixing their first full-length album, Travis Caine and Katherine Kin of Von Haze gave friends and fans a first listen to a few of their latest songs at Cameo Gallery on a drizzly Brooklyn Saturday night. The dark, intimate space made for subdued splendor, the pair dimly lit under the white tendrils of the floaty ceiling sculpture. (As long as there’s some splendor conjured, a set doesn’t always have to be turned up to 10). Hits from the duo’s previous EP, like “Outside the Night” and “Looking Down”, were balanced with new tracks such as “Carved Head”, a buzzing, synth-driven tune featuring Kin’s oscillating, ghosted-out vocals weaving throughout the heady wails of Morgan’s Firebird.
Just down the block at Glasslands, an arms-in-the-air dance party was underway, courtesy of Dovecote Records. Djs drove the kids into a sweaty crush on the dancefloor, readying them for the entrance of Hard Mix. The solo knob-wizard’s stage set was minimal at best: no lights, no frills, his equipment set up on a rickety card table towards the edge. That’s one way to make sure your props don’t overshadow the music. Here’s a shadowy video glimpse of a Hard Mix hit from Defaults during his first live outing:
