London’s The Duke Spirit were more stunning than ever, playing the posh baronial party space upstairs at Bowery Hotel on Tuesday night for KCRW’s “School Night” event, hosted by the Santa Monica station’s DJ Chris Douridas. Being that the venue is a hotel and not a proper music venue, the sound wasn’t as big as it could have been, though the lofty backdrop was royal indeed.

I’ve seen this band over the years at every kind of venue, from breezy outdoor tents at SXSW to dank basements in LES to the mighty Webster Hall, so I know the rock grandeur they are capable of.

Even so, the band, fronted by the always captivating and sultry-voiced Leila Moss, made the room their own, opening the set with back to back older hits like “The Step and the Walk” before sliding into some swanky, riff-fueled new songs like single “Don’t Wait”, from their third album, Bruiser, available in North America digitally this November before its official January release.

  1. Leila is a force! She sounded great as always. Her hair was swept off her face and she looked stunning but I missed her old hairstyle, the bangs that gave her a sultry, mysterious look. That is my very important comment on the performance.
