Get ready, fashion world. There is a threat brewing, or incubating rather, in Brooklyn. Literally. Bob Bland, the founder of design label Brooklyn Royalty has invented the beginnings of Manufacture New York, a fashion incubator. Manufacture New York is a network that is planning on arming the next generation of independent fashion designers with the skills and tools necessary to create, manufacture and sell their own clothing.
Due to the current state of fashion, most people (designers included) are not properly educated about the industry. And its quite difficult to excel without using amoral tactics once you reach a certain level. Bob tells me that Manufacture New York tries “to keep it real and honest. The sense of dignity that everyone has even though we have no money and no big resources is part of the reason why its so hard to succeed.” She added that “there is not enough infrastructure left in the New York City fashion industry to support emerging designers.“ She plans to change that.
The goal is to have a showroom, factory and studios. In order to raise the money necessary (they are aiming for 50,000) to begin the construction of these facilities, Manufacture New York will be holding a Kickstarter Launch Party this Monday at Brooklyn Farmacy. There will be icecream, great giveaways, and sewing demos.
